GAMBLING ISSUE 10-14-11 Read an excellent article, left, for a very good update. ============================================================== Dear _______________ We are writing to oppose any expansion of gambling here in Florida. In spite of its fallacious appeal in difficult financial times, it is just plain wrong to attempt to fund government through gambling. Gambling is a corrosive element because: · Gambling violates moral principles and degrades people · It contributes to crime and corruption- embezzlement, theft, social problems · Gambling destroys lives · It hurts innocent people – spouses, children, and communities suffer
Increased access to Vegas casino-style gambling will expand the problems caused by gambling and Florida people and government will be left to pay the costs. Any financial gain is sure to be short-lived and counter-productive.
The Legislature is urged not to approve this expansion of gambling but to take a stand for good government that supports what’s best for the people.
Yours truly,
Signature & address ======================================================================================== A "Letter to the Editor", mailed 10-9-11 is included below as a resource: As Friday’s S-H Tribune makes clear, our lovely Florida faces an impending very serious threat – some Florida lawmakers even now are wrapping up proposed laws that would bring huge Vegas-style casinos to our shores. After salivating for years, gambling interests are already jumping ahead with construction of billion dollar projects, anticipating approval. It’s critical that we quickly make it clear to our Legislators that we will not allow Florida to be turned into another gambling mecca like Nevada. We have fought this blight for years and it is now knocking at our doors! As our nation is clearly facing moral slide, we should not add to it with Vegas-style casinos here in Florida. Their impact is well documented – increased crime, horrible impact on families devastated by gambling addiction, increased cost for law enforcement, influx of undesirables, etc. Even though we’ll soon be hearing from well-financed politicians and gambling interests of the glories that this will bring, we need to be wise enough to see the truth – Vegas-style casinos, and yes, funding government thru their money, is a lose-lose situation. It will totally change the nature of our family-friendly lives here in Florida.
It’s time now, to stand up and say “NO” to Vegas-style casinos in Florida. Sarasota Christian Coalition is hosting a meeting with Florida Casino Watch at 7:00PM, Thursday evening, 27 September, at Fellowship of Believers Church, 3333 12th St., Sarasota, to show
folks what this all means and to help mobilize resistance against this big-money gambling assault against our way of life here in Florida. Details at www.sarasotachristiancoalition.com. We do not want Florida to become another gambling mecca with all of the huge negatives it will inflict on us. Don Cunningham Chairman, Sarasota Christian Coalition / Faith & Freedom Coalition
